Dr. Jena Catania, Evanston Staff Therapist

Providing therapy for Evanston adults and adolescents.

Dr. Jena Catania

“I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership, and find the relational aspect of therapy to be an integral piece in making strides towards meeting client’s needs and goals. Confronting the difficulties and pain in life is often challenging and uncomfortable—as such I strive to create a safe space for my clients to process authentically. I know each client is unique and work to meet the client where they are, with empathy, humor, support, challenge, and encouragement throughout our journey together.

“In creating a safe and supportive space, I utilize interventions from a variety of therapeutic frameworks in order to meet the needs of my clients individually. I pull mainly from multicultural and feminist/relational theories, and often utilize DBT and mindfulness skills to help clients process and understand themselves on a deeper, more fulfilling level.

“As a queer-identified woman I can uniquely understand the complexities of questioning one’s sexual identity. As such, helping clients navigate the process of acceptance, owning, and loving oneself, through compassion, care and support in sessions are integral to exploring this aspect of identity.”

Background

Jena Catania (she/her/hers) earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology (ISPP) at National Louis University in 2021. She received her Master’s in Clinical Psychology from ISPP in 2017. Dr. Catania completed her pre-doctoral internship at Psychological Consultations, working mostly with the LGBTQIA+ and HIV impacted population. She provided individual therapy as well as facilitated support/process groups, provided standard and neuropsychological testing and feedback, and supervised practicum students individually and within a group setting. Dr. Catania has been a therapist at Mindful Psychology Associates since 2019.

Throughout Dr. Catania’s training, she has worked in inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric hospitals, community mental health settings, therapeutic day schools, and private practices. During her time as a student at ISPP, Jena served as a teaching assistant for various courses, often focusing on multicultural psychology and interventions, basic therapy skills, and personal and professional development for first year graduate students.

Dr. Catania is a postdoctoral fellow at Mindful Psychology Associates which means that she is working toward licensure as a clinical psychologist and, as such, is directly supervised by Licensed Clinical Psychologist Jennifer Panning, Psy.D.

Dr. Catania sees clients Tuesdays through Saturdays in our Evanston office.

Thank you @therapists.in.action for reminding us t Thank you @therapists.in.action for reminding us that therapy is very much a political act! Mindful Psychology Associates is proudly anti-racist, pro gun control, pro reproductive rights practice, pro LGBTQ+ folks and we aim to have a safe space where our clients know that their therapists are aligned with these human rights values. We want our clients to know that their individual concerns are not in isolation—they are part of larger systems that are contributing to ongoing trauma and we want to acknowledge the harm of systemic trauma. We are here for you during this unsettling time and will be joining in the fight to address reproductive rights and be a voice for change. MPA staff are taking a breather after a long and intense school year…founder Jennifer Panning PsyD is letting all the stress go in beautiful Banff National Park in Canada…more pictures later but for now more letting the healing properties of nature bring peace and calm! Mental health support isn’t just about therapy, Mental health support isn’t just about therapy, medication, teaching coping skills, or processing past trauma. We are committed to understanding how sociopolitical issues impact our mental health and the repeal of Roe vs Wade has us very concerned about the negative impact on women’s mental health. MPA Founder Jennifer Panning PsyD will be writing more about this issue in the near future. It is very difficult to have good mental health when there are so many destabilizing factors in our society—we’ve seen the traumatic impact of the pandemic and impending fascism. We are committed to helping decrease anxiety, depression, and trauma…Let’s figure out a way to mobilize together to best navigate what may be another example of women being disrespected and disempowered. #mindfulpsychologyevanston #mindfulpsychologyassociates #evanston #abortionishealthcare #abortionisawomansright #psychology #trauma #chicagotherapist #psychologistsofinstagram #anxiety #depression
Great news for #evanston! Thanks to city council a Great news for #evanston! Thanks to city council and Mayor Biss for approving funding to build a mental health “Living Room” resource center as an alternative to emergency rooms when people are experiencing a psychiatric crisis and need supportive services. This will be a valuable addition to the community to address mental health needs.
