Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT)

radically open dialectical behavior therapy

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy — known as RO-DBT — was developed by Thomas Lynch, PhD, and his colleagues, and has been empirically validated and researched with clients for 20 years. While traditional DBT is helpful for individuals who need more help regulating and controlling emotions, RO-DBT is designed for those who benefit from goals of openness and flexibility. Mindful Psychology Associates offers RO-DBT classes regularly to support individual therapy (with our therapists or others).

Benefits of RO-DBT

  • Flexibility
  • Openness
  • Social connectedness
  • Emotional expressiveness

Who can benefit from RO-DBT?

Do traits like these ring a bell?

  • Perfectionism
  • Excessive self control
  • Rule follower
  • Preference for order, structure
  • Reserved, restrained
  • Frugal

RO is a trans-diagnostic treatment approach, meaning that it was not designed for one particular diagnosis. However, if you struggle with any of the following problems, you may benefit from RO treatment:

  • Chronic depression
  • Treatment resistant anxiety
  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Body Dysmorphia
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCDP)

For more information on the treatment approach, visit the Radically Open website.

If you identify with any or all of the following traits, you may benefit from RO-DBT:

  • Rigidity in behaviors or thinking (perfectionism)
  • Excessive need to be in control (over control)
  • Difficulty accessing emotions
  • Social isolation
  • Emotionally shut down or guarded

RO-DBT is available as individual therapy, as well as a 30 lesson skills training class. Please contact us for details about when our next class will start.

NOTE: RO-DBT skills class clients must be in ongoing individual therapy, either with an MPA or an outside therapist. We will collaborate with referring therapists.

Mindful Psychology Associates was a proud sponsor Mindful Psychology Associates was a proud sponsor of Evanston Pride, which culminated in a community picnic this past weekend. It was perfect weather to be outside enjoying food, music, crafts, and learning about many local organizations and causes who had booths there. We had a wonderful time talking to community members about our services, chatting with fellow vendors (including watching the many dogs excited to get goodies at @bentleyspetstuffevanston booth next to ours!) And to answer a commonly heard question—yes some of our clinicians have immediate openings for individual, couples, family, and group therapy! We are in network w BCBS and Aetna PPO. Congrats @evanston_pride for a wonderful event and we can’t wait until next year’s! #mindfulpsychologyassociates #mindfulpsychologyevanston #evanston #pride🌈 #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtqtherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #chicagotherapist

Thank you @therapists.in.action for reminding us t Thank you @therapists.in.action for reminding us that therapy is very much a political act! Mindful Psychology Associates is proudly anti-racist, pro gun control, pro reproductive rights practice, pro LGBTQ+ folks and we aim to have a safe space where our clients know that their therapists are aligned with these human rights values. We want our clients to know that their individual concerns are not in isolation—they are part of larger systems that are contributing to ongoing trauma and we want to acknowledge the harm of systemic trauma. We are here for you during this unsettling time and will be joining in the fight to address reproductive rights and be a voice for change.
